A New iPad Painting

In response to a dreary and cold day with an unrelenting "wintry mix".

A New Pastel

Here's a 10 x 13 pastel on paper, from the early snowfall we had a few weeks ago. Snow before the leaves are off the trees is such a strange sight! "Early Snowmelt"

Breakfast in November, iPad Painting

Why waste all that good pie? This is a great way to fortify yourself when it's freezing cold and windy outside.

Here's a pastel I'm working on, from my trip to France earlier this year. Pastel on paper.

Back to the Easel

After a few weeks of hectic non-painting activity, I'm back at it.

This may be one of the oddest views of Paris ever painted!

"Steps to the Seine", pastel on paper.

Open Studio THIS weekend!

I love Open Studio weekend. People come from all over New England to drive/bike around Acton and check out what the local art community is up to. My sister, Jane, shows her work in my studio during this event, and my friend John Lindbeck sets up his art tent just outside. We let him come in occasionally to warm up.

I hope you'll come by for a first, or a return visit this year! It's fine to just browse and enjoy the artwork, and it's fine to pick out a gift for yourself or a friend. I do accept Visa and MasterCard.

Two For Friendship, Pastel on Paper

Ending Summer on an Up Note (or, tooting my own horn)

This pastel was selected for the Purchase Award at the WCSH6 Downtown Portland (Maine) Sidewalk Art Festival on Saturday. The scene is at the Farm Neck golf course on Martha's Vineyard. It's actually half of a diptych, but the award could be presented to only one painting. The painting was purchased by WCSH6-TV.

A Wintry Pastel

The recent heat wave in our neck of the woods prompted me to stand at the easel and revive a pastel piece that I'd begun a while ago. I'm not sure this nearby, young apple orchard has seen such a snowstorm yet, but I look forward to seeing the white buildings in a swirl of cold, white flakes next winter!

A Little Gouache Painting

s o l d

Here's a small (7" x 7") gouache painting I'm working on. It's from my recent trip to France, but isn't anyplace in particular. Rather, this is a compilation of several different images in the town of Richerenches.
What is gouache? It's a highly pigmented, opaque cousin of watercolor. Fun to use!

Beacon Hill Art Walk

Despite having forgotten to send my application and fee in March, I was again part of the annual Beacon Hill Art Walk. I shared a beautiful backyard garden spot with the artist Danny O and his sidekick, Nick. My daughter, Sarah, assisted me. Here's the ribbon I won.

Saturday's Paint Out!

This Saturday I'll be joining a group artists in the Merrimack Valley, painting en plain air during the day, and auctioning off those paintings in the evening. Other exciting items will be auctioned off as well, by everyone's favorite weatherman/auctioneer, Matt Noyes! The event benefits the Essex Art center in Lawrence, MA.

A New iPad Painting

Here's a rainy day view out the window of my 3rd floor office. Painted on the iPad.

Sunday, May 6, 2012

Two exciting upcoming events!

Saturday, June 2: Once again, I'll be spending the day painting a scene somewhere in the Merrimack Valley, to be auctioned off that evening at a wonderful, catered fundraising gala. What a great opportunity to bid on an original painting by one of the 30 artists participating.
For more info or to buy tickets to the auction, go here: essexartcenter.com/newpaint

Sunday, June 3: I'll be exhibiting in the annual Beacon Hill Art Walk — one of my favorite shows. Stroll through the beautiful, hidden back yards and gardens of Beacon Hill, while taking in the fine art offerings of the artists participating in this juried event. My location will be posted here later. For more info, go here: beaconhillartwalk.org.

Hope to see you!

Tiny iPhone painting

I was trapped in the kitchen this morning. Not wanting to leave the steaks on the Jenn-Aire (who cooks steaks at 7AM? Long story) unattended to go upstairs and grab my iPad, I opened the Brushes app on the comparatively tiny iPhone, and painted this little slice of the back yard.

Casemate -- First in a series

Though certifiably claustrophobic, there's something about underground or fortified rooms that fascinates me. So, I'm starting a series of pastels based on a recent visit to Castillo de San Marcos, in St. Augustine, Florida.
This small pastel is on handmade paper -- a perfect surface for depicting the aged coquina walls.

iPad Painting: More Like March

I interrupted my Monday housework to grab the iPad and try to capture the windy, cloudy early-morning sky, viewed through a skylight.
