I had lunch recently with a couple of townies — people I've known for over 50 years. Our formative years were spent in Andover, Massachusetts — the subject of this small pastel. From a mid-century photo, this will be the basis for an oil painting.
The recent heat wave in our neck of the woods prompted me to stand at the easel and revive a pastel piece that I'd begun a while ago. I'm not sure this nearby, young apple orchard has seen such a snowstorm yet, but I look forward to seeing the white buildings in a swirl of cold, white flakes next winter!
With all of the hustle & bustle of the end of the school semester and the holidays coming to an end, I felt relaxed enough to head out to the studio yesterday. Here's the resulting painting.
This small diptych is a study of two houses, one in Newburyport, MA and the other in Provincetown, MA. Both face a body of water, and seem to share a kinship. I was intrigued by the similarities and differences in both the houses and the cities they are in. Pastel on paper, 6.5 x 14.
I'm calling this one "Power". Not sure why this scene even attracted me; maybe it's the tension between those gargantuan wooden structures and the trees nearby. Comments welcome.
My studio has become a chop shop of sorts lately. Several paintings, old and new, including this one, have found themselves a few sizes smaller. I think in each case it's an improvement, and possibly a step toward a better composition next time.
