Memories of France

Here's one I sneaked in during my so-called hiatus. Sometimes the studio just calls too insistently.

Back to work!

I'm back in the studio, effective today. I took my usual holiday hiatus — it's just too darn busy between Thanksgiving and Christmas!

Here's a small scale Winter scene done this afternoon in gouache and graphite on paper.

I love gouache! I love graphite!

Welcome to October

This new piece is from a nearby pond, and inspired by the dramatic sunsets we are lucky enough to see on a regular basis.

Early Summer in France

Another from my recent residency in Orquevaux, France.  At the end of this serene path live a couple of goats, a couple of pigs, and two prize-winning roosters.

Sometimes...

 Sometimes a painting paints itself.

Sometimes, a painting starts out as something and ends up something else.

Summer Sunrise

I've enjoyed spending time in Newport, Rhode Island. One view I particularly love is this one — the sun rising over a rocky shore.

Waterway #1

Another oil painting from my recent residency in France. This is an interpretation of the view out my bedroom window at the Chateau d'Orquevaux.

Watch this space for more from this unforgettable experience!

Please read the letter that I wrote

I'm working on a series of paintings that reflect fond memories of my recent residency in Orquevaux, France. Since my studio is undergoing some major renovations, I'm also deciding what things to keep and what to toss or donate. I pulled out the old Discman, plugged it into my old Cambridge Soundworks receiver, and am listening to old CDs. Lots of "New Age" music will be donated to charity, but a favorite is an album by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, which I've decided to hold on to.

Residency in France

One of several I’ve been working on in France. Funny — traveling 3500 miles from home only to paint pictures of light fixtures. My new friend came up with the idea of mounting this in the fireplace in my studio. A great example of the power of breathing the same air as other creatives for a while.

Don’t worry — this isn’t my only subject on this adventure!

A Sunday walk

Here's one I'm working on, from a hike in some local woods. I'm planning to do two versions of this, because when I came to the the fork in the road, painting-wise, I couldn't decide, so I decided to make two paintings. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, back in Siena

I'm working on a larger version of a doorway in Siena, Tuscany. The small one practically painted itself and was so much fun that I thought I'd give it another try.

Working from small to large is a challenge! Note that this is in PROGRESS — there's some tape where I need a straight line, there's a glare from the sun, and I'm re-re-working the top window area.

On Island

Memories of summer days on the tiny island of Chappaquiddick. No crowds, no traffic, plenty of conservation land. "Nothing to do" turned out to be a lot of fun for our children.

Winter Sunrise

The winter sun rises relatively late in my neck of the woods, So I don't have to leap out of bed at some crazy hour in order to witness it. Here's a work in progress now finished after a recent snowfall.

Indian Yellow and the Internet

I recently discovered that Indian Yellow, a delicious oil paint color in a tube, can do all sorts of wonderful and unexpected things. For example, the rich wood of this door in Siena, Tuscany, came to life as a result of glazing with Indian yellow on top of a more subtle base color. This small painting was a joy for me from start to finish, and as a bonus, was sold within hours of being posted on the internet.
